Why is Mac OS being given a new name?

As Apple prepares to unveil a new Mac OS operating system next week, some are curious about the new name. According to 9to5Mac, "Mac OS" will be replaced by "OS X" in upcoming releases and marketing materials. While the naming change isn't set in stone, it makes sense given that Mac OS is now a platform-agnostic operating system designed for both desktop and mobile devices.

Apple is discontinuing the Mac OS operating system and replacing it with a new name – iOS 12. This change occurs because iOS 12 is designed to be more interoperable with other devices, such as iPhones and iPads.
